I found an interesting site through someone's blog, Virtual Sketch Date . Every month there is a reference photo posted a week before the dealine. You then sign up on comments and post your sketch on your blog on Sat. and Sunday all the entries are posted at Virtual Sketch Date. I started with contour drawings of the petals, continued from there and added watercolor.
This is the reference photo for Sept. I don't usually sketch from photos so this was a little different for me. It is great fun to see how everyone's sketches are the same but different. Wonder what next month will bring.

This is a very nice sketch. I like the soft colors with the inked contour lines. My intention for the month was to create a sketch, but I ended up in some middle ground between a sketch and a finished piece. Seeing your entry makes me wish I had stuck to my first intention.
I have presented you with an award on my blog...Pop in and pick it up at you leisure! :) Spread the JOY!
I love it! It has a joyful feel to it and I can tell you enjoyed doing it. Great soft colours too!
I like that this was done as a contour drawing and is well done :)
I really like what you did with this. It has such a fresh feel to it, and so expressive!
You've created such a light cheery mood with this...well done.
Hi Deborah great sketch. Very soft and the contour lines add so much.
It was my first virtual sketch date also lots of fun to see how differently the references are handled
I like your solution to the dark background! Make it light!
Very nice result!
So pretty! I need to check into this. Love a challenge.
Fresh and refreshing! Love the simple beauty here of ink and wash....Beautiful.
I love your pen and watercolor! It is very light and fresh and brings forth the mood of this photo very well!
Very nice job on the background, too!
great drawing, like your background interpretation, you kept your composition neat and I really like your color choices.
I really like to see watercolor and pen. This is just great.
Love the pen and watercolour!
Nice work!
Lovely peony Deborah. And I love the colour you've chosen for the background!

So wonderful-for the heart.
You've done a really nice job with this, Deborah. Virtual sketch date sound like a lot of fun - maybe I'll join you (once I clear up the backlog of work I've just gotten back to!)
It's fun to see different people's styles with the same reference photo.
Deborah...
I like the stream lining and simplification of the drawing...
